A brief history of our journey in recent years. In 2002 two churches merged—Springfield/Camira Church of Christ and the Redbank Plains church of Christ—to become known as the Bellbird Park Church of Christ. During this time the church met in a small building of Redbank Plains Road in Bellbird Park. Late in 2004 the church sensed a need for a fresh vision from God and new directions for the future. Through a series of miraculous God moments a partnership was formed between our current Pastoral Team Leaders—Brett & Carolyn Swann and what was then known as the Bellbird Park Church of Christ. At the same time God was opening the door for the church to move from Bellbird Park and into what is one of the fastest growing residential areas in South East Queensland—the Wider Springfield Region. A partnership was struck between Churches of Christ Care, The Staines Memorial College and the Bellbird Park Church of Christ. In october 2004 the church changed its name to Springfield Community Oasis and began planning their move into the Springfield area. In January 2005 we moved into our new building which is shared with the Staines Memorial College and set out on an adventure of a life time—pursuing a fresh vision, defining a new culture and committing to the mission of ‘Moving beyond Believing to Beliving’. We moved with 15 voting members and around 20 attendees. Miraculously by the end of February we had around 60 in weekly attendance with a possible 80. We had 40 committed core members, new facilities and an awesome opportunity to impact a generation and a culture for Jesus Christ. And so was born the Springfield Community Oasis! During June of 2005 we appointed Sheralyn Anderson to our Pastoral Team as our 'Student's Communtiy Development Pastor'. Sheralyn performs this role on a part time basis along with raising her three boys. Sheralyn leads our student's outreach team who together work in 6 of our local schools, both primary and high as well as the University of Southern Qld Springfield Campus. She also plays a huge role in helping her husband Heath to organise our regular RAKs (Radical Acts of Kindness). We held our Official Public Launch on July 17th 2005 with 180 people in attendance. By the end of 2005 we had approximately 100 people in regular attendance across our two worship gatherings. This web site was developed around the time of opur public launch in July 2005. It is our hope that by exploring its pages you will get a deeper understanding of the kind of church we can see. In February 2006 we appointed our fourth Pastoral Team member in Rod Cole. Rod is our 'Church Community Development Pastor'. He is responsible for developing pathways for people new to the church to move from visitor to active participant in God's mission here at the Oasis. He also looks after our Leadership Development, Life Groups, Welcome Ministries and regularly leads worship and our teaching times. By the start of 2006 we had over 100 people from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities meeting regularly for corporate worship gatehrings and weekly Life Groups as well as acts of service. 2006 was a challenging year as we struggled to cope with limited space in our weekend worship facility. We had big dreams but could find few options of how to achieve them without a greater resources. By mid 2006 the hunt was on for a new premises. We had 100 people a little cash balance and a big God. Within 6 months we were signing a contract on our new Oasis Resource Center. Since purchasing our new resource center numerous new doors have opened for us. We have grown to around 200 people. We are moving towards opening Cafe Oasis, we are taking steps to establish a Faith Based Counselling Service. We now have facilities for our many groups to meet in each week. The community has gained greater access to our services. At the begining of 2008 we are taking steps towards expanding The Oasis across the Greater Springfield region and beyond as we prepare to plant a number of Extension Hubs. It is our desire to become one church that meets in many locations. This will help us achieve our goal of grwoing larger whilst staying smaller. It will enable us to remain missional in our local communities. It will enable us to impact a generation with the love of Jesus in real and tangible ways. In April The Oasis amalgamated with Bundamba Church of Christ to establish our first Hub. The Oasis Bundamba Hub is located at 25 Byrne Street, Bundamba. We have a significant facility from which we will base our first Hub. Over the coming months we will appoint a Hub Pastor to tkae the lead in planting this Hub and expanding the ministry of The Oasis closer into the heart of Ipswich City. I look forward to expanding this history as it unfolds in the future. |
