The Oasis runs a food bank/discount food outlet in the heart of Goodna located at 24 Smith Road Goodna. The store is staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers who exist to serve their community. We service between 50-70 struggling families every week. The shop opens every Wednesday from 9.30 am until 12.30 pm. Items range from toilet paper through to frozen foods, sauces, soups, juices, and everything in between. Those who use the service benefit from savings in excess of 50 off their weekly grocery bills. The service is open to anyone who needs it! Every Tuesday the service is open for Centrelink referrals for food parcels between 9an and 11 am. Our Gleaners store gives us weekly opportunities to serve our community and be present to support those in need – either by prayer, moral support, a cheerful smile or referral to other relevant services.

Bringing Resources Together Gleaners is a vital link between available food and those who need it most. Local and national producers have surplus food that may otherwise go to waste for lack of a way to safely and efficiently bring it to market. Human service agencies face tight budgets and increasing demand for services. Our expertise and facilities bring these valuable resources together to help ease the problem of hunger. Gleaners collects, warehouses, repacks and distributes food for over 200 families each week across out four outlets, Goodna, Leichhardt, Booval and Fernvale. Gleaners are also able to reinvest surplus funds into the local community as they are available. Where the Food Comes From Safe and marketable food is donated by farmers, grocery stores, supermarkets, food distributors, and food manufacturers, while some is purchased in truckload quantities at low cost. The food is made available to discount food outlets like Gleaners for many reasons. A small labeling error may keep it from reaching retail markets, or it needs to be immediately distributed if it is close to its sales date. Some food is available as a result of surplus production. Fresh Fruit and Veges We are currently working with the Rocklea Markets and local farmers to source a regular supply of fresh fruit and vegetables. We hope to expand our range in the near future. My Mates at Gleaners There's a little old house, just up from "St. Ives", And the people who serve there Have helped many lives. They call them "Gleaners" I call them my friends, When I pop in to see them, Much pleasure it lends. They always make time, For a cheery "Hello" Or to lend an ear When you're feeling low Not to speak of the way, How my budget I ease, When I got to the fridge, For a pie and some peas! So if you're in the market, A Poem by Josey |
